Thank you for considering a career at Bon Secours!The Medical Physicist is responsible for the oversight and implementation of new treatment devices and treatment techniques in Radiation Oncology. This includes the development of accurate planning techniques, safe treatment techniques, and adherence to quality standards set forth by the American Association of Medical Physicists (AAPM) as well as the American College of Radiology (ACR). Responsible for the clinical workflow and radiation safety in coordination with the radiation safety officer. Responsible for maintaining quality assurance standards on the linear accelerators, high dose remote afterloaders, and treatment planning computers.Essential Job Functions:

  • Provides radiological oncology physics services
  • Performs quality assurance checks on treatment plans and advises dosimetry and the radiation oncologist on any changes necessary for the safe and accurate delivery of radiation.
  • Advises on the development and maintenance of quality control procedures for measuring the performance level of the therapy and imaging equipment
  • Provides calibrations for all radiation generating units and radioactive materials within the department of Radiation Oncology. This is within the scope of the physicist current license. Performs and oversees, if appropriate, daily, weekly, monthly, and annual quality control checks on the equipment as required by State and Federal Regulations.
  • With periodic and annual review of policies, procedures, and documentation, recommends as necessary to assure departments conform to NRC, JCAHO, ACR standards and Federal Regulations. Interacts with accreditation and regulatory agencies.
  • Obtains and evaluates patient's treatment field localization procedures as indicated per physician prescribing and or departmental policy and procedures. Makes necessary changes per physicians recommendations
  • Repairs electronic and mechanical equipment, with proper training, to include the linear accelerators and simulators when such repairs can be accomplished without the manufacturer's technical representative. Contacts representative for assistance when needed and reviews and monitors work of same.
  • Assumes dosimetrist's responsibilities as required to meet patient care and operation demands
  • Accurately prepares patient treatment setup instructions and custom shielding devicesEquipment: The equipment at the clinic includes a Varian TrueBeam and EDGE linear accelerators, Varian GammaMed Plus HDR unit, and GE Optima CT Simulator. The treatment planning system is Varian Eclipse v16.1 and ARIA record and verify system. The second check dosimetry software includes RadCalc and MOBIUS 3D.
