SOLID WASTE EQUIPMENT OPERATOR IV - 0122 Salary $38,480.00 - $56,763.20 Annually Location 475 Fairforest Way - Greenville, SC Job Type Full Time Department PUBLIC WORKS Job Number 00691 Division SOLID WASTE & RECYCLING Brief Description Job SummaryUnder regular direction and in compliance with standard operating procedures and policies, safely and effectively operates all solid waste equipment in a relief capacity to collect and transport solid waste and recycling materials to a transfer station and/or landfill for disposal. Performs daily pre-and post-trip vehicle inspections and maintains accurate vehicle log. Courteously conveys basic information to the public when approached with questions. Trains new and existing equipment operators in use of all equipment. In absence of supervisor, provides guidance and direction to subordinate staff. Job Duties Essential Functions
Operate Solid Waste Heavy Equipment: Operate all Solid Waste equipment (e.g. Automated Side-Loader (ASL), Automated Leaf Vacuum Truck (ALV), Rear Loader, Clam Truck, Flatbed Truck, Roll-Off Truck, etc.) in a relief capacity to collect and transport solid waste and/ or recycling materials to a transfer station, material recovery facility, or landfill for disposal or processing on a daily basis. According to daily needs of the division, may drive any route. Operate equipment with moving maneuverable parts in high traffic areas and around stationary objects. In performance of assigned tasks, proficiently utilize joysticks and levers to control multiple moving truck parts to include robotic/mechanical arms with claw/grabber, boom/suction hose, or boom/crane telescopic extension. Assist with after-hours special events waste collection including manual collections not associated with regular routes. During inclement weather, operate snow and ice removal equipment as needed. Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner providing information within the area of assignment including explaining collection procedures. Facilitates the resolution of complaints/concerns in a timely and efficient manner. Complete and submit records of the number of daily pick-ups, tonnage of loads, fuel usage, odometer readings, minor costs, and other records associated with solid waste refuse collections. Ensure equipment is properly fueled, lubricants are at appropriate levels, and tires are properly inflated. Wash equipment daily and clean cab area at least once a week. 80%

Perform and Comply with Safety Measures: Perform daily pre-and post-trip vehicle inspections and maintain accurate vehicle log. Inspect equipment prior to and after use in order to identify needed maintenance and report needs to supervisor or Fleet Division. Observe and listen to equipment during use to identify malfunctions or parts in need of replacement. When necessary shut down equipment to prevent further damage or hazards. Utilize proper body mechanics and ergonomics in performance of work. Use operating skills, learned safe practices and awareness of the surrounding area to avoid injury or damage to persons or property. Utilize spotters, flaggers or helpers as needed to maintain a safe working environment. When potentially unsafe conditions are observed make efforts to avoid or correct and notify responsible supervisor or safety representative in a timely manner. 10%

Train & Supervise Staff in Operation of Equipment: Train new or existing equipment operators in the use of all equipment. In absence of supervisor, as directed provide guidance and direction to subordinate staff; schedule and assign work; and check work in progress and upon completion. May provide input/recommendations on personnel matters. 10%

Qualifications Job RequirementsHigh school diploma or equivalent.Over two years of experience operating and driving solid waste collection, right- and left-side drive, equipment (e.g., ASL, ALV, Clam Truck, etc.).ORAt least 6 months of experience as a Solid Waste Equipment Operator III with demonstrated proficiency operating all solid waste collection equipment.Must be able to obtain a DOT Medical Card from the City of Greenville.
Driver`s License RequirementsValid South Carolina Class B CDL with air brake provision.
Performance RequirementsKnowledge of:
The safe operation of commercial vehicles and heavy equipment, including complete familiarization with there systems and safety features.Traffic rules, regulations, and laws and procedures for the safe operation of commercial vehicles and heavy equipment.Geography and roadways of an assigned route(s).
Ability to: Operate commercial vehicles and heavy equipment safely. Operate vehicle two-way radio system, and specialized on-board equipment. Operate and/or utilize all standard safety equipment installed in/on vehicles and equipment, including safety harnesses, restraints, fire extinguishers, and any other equipment required by federal, state, or local regulations. Conduct and document pre- and post-trip inspections. Properly climb up and down to enter and exit vehicle frequently throughout the day. Perform traffic flagging and understand signs and procedures. Operate joystick or button control systems. Read and understand maps and schedules. Read, understand and follow rules and regulations, vehicle operating procedures, vehicle laws, and written and oral instructions. Maintain effective working relationships and deal courteously and effectively with the public, fellow employees, and supervisors. Be able to work without immediate supervision in the field and thoroughly complete all assignments. In absence of supervisor, provide guidance and direction to subordinate staff. Train new or existing equipment operators in the use of all equipment. Report accidents, injuries, and incidents immediately. Maintain simple records and make basic mathematical calculations. Be punctual and maintain regular, predictable attendance. Be available to work a flexible schedule that includes nights, weekends, holidays, and a reasonable amount of overtime. Working Conditions
Primary Work Location: Vehicle and outdoors.
Protective Equipment Required: Steel-toed shoes, gloves (optional), safety vest, hardhat, and safety glasses.
Environmental/Health and Safety Factors: Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards with the majority of work performed outside or with exposure to risk. Daily exposure to extreme temperature, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards. Weekly exposure to chemical hazards. Seasonal exposure to wetness and/or humidity.
Physical Demands: Constantly requires hearing, vision, talking, fine dexterity, handling/grasping, reaching, twisting, sitting, and foot controls. Frequently requires pushing/pulling, bending, climbing, kneeling, and walking. Occasionally requires carrying, lifting, crouching/stooping, balancing, and standing. Strength demands include frequently exerting up to 20 pounds and occasionally exerting 20-50 pounds.

Mental Demands: Frequently requires tedious or exacting work, working in a noisy/distracting environment, and working closely with others as part of a team. Occasionally requires time pressures, frequent change of tasks, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, and working an irregular schedule or overtime.
