Brief Description of the Job
Work schedule is irregular and requires shift work with varying
hours, including some nights and weekends.
Mechanic I: Under supervision, performs manufacturer specified
preventive maintenance services A and B and safety checks on the
Transit vehicles. Repairs and/or replaces transit vehicle parts and
components as needed. Documents all maintenance and repairs by
completing a check sheet for each service provided. Inputs service
and repair data into the transit management job order software.
Secures the necessary repair parts from the parts room. Assists
other mechanics with repairs and/or replacements. Interprets and
follows work tasking on job orders. Documents all work as required.
Maintains a clean and safe shop area. Assists co-workers in
cleaning, organizing, sweeping, and mopping the shop area. Serves
as a subject matter expert on Greenlink`s Safety Committee as
required.
Mechanic II: Under limited supervision, performs preventive
maintenance services A and B involving the maintenance and repair
of gasoline or diesel engines, auto equipment, and machinery and
tools. Performs routine diagnostic and repair services to address
vehicle/equipment related problems. Performs skilled tasks in the
mechanical maintenance of automobiles, trucks, buses, tractors,
small engines, and other standard and special automotive equipment
operated by the City. Completes job assignments including brake and
suspension repairs, tire repairs, minor adjustments, engine
tune-ups, air conditioning services, and basic manufacturer
maintenance services. Follows work tasking on work orders and
document all work as required. Secures the necessary repair parts
from the parts room/counter. Enters all vehicle service and repairs
information into the fleet maintenance software. Responds to calls
for fleet roadside assistance by repairing or arranging for towing
of stranded fleet vehicles. Additionally, Greenlink personnel may
serve as a subject matter expert on Greenlink`s Safety Committee as
required.
Mechanic III: Under minimal supervision, performs major repairs of
vehicles/equipment related problems. Performs skilled work
involving the maintenance and repair of gasoline or diesel engines
and related auto equipment, machinery and tools. Performs
manufacturer-specified A, B, and C preventative maintenance
routines on vehicles and equipment. Performs skilled tasks in the
mechanical maintenance of automobiles, trucks, tractors, small
engines, and other standard and special automotive equipment
operated by the City. Installs communications equipment into
vehicles, including radios and cellular telephones. Modifies City
equipment for specific requirements. Follows work tasking on work
orders and document all work as required. Additionally, Greenlink
personnel may serve as a subject matter expert on Greenlink`s
Safety Committee as required. Job Duties Essential Functions
Mechanic I
Perform Preventative Maintenance and Repairs (90%): Perform
manufacturer specified preventive maintenance services A and B, and
safety checks on all Transit vehicles. Repair and/or replace
transit vehicle parts and components such as brakes and shocks,
engine oil and filters, lubricants, hoses, belts, bearings, plugs,
and wires as required. Secure the necessary repair parts from the
parts vendor in order to complete all basic services and repairs.
Interpret job orders, follow work flow and document all completed
tasks. Document all maintenance and repairs by completing a check
sheet for each service provided. Input service and repair data into
the transit management job order software. Assist other mechanics
with repairs/replacements such as brakes and suspension, minor
adjustments and body work, engine tune-ups, air conditioning
services, and basic manufacturer maintenance services. Actively
participate in the reporting of safety issues and concerns that are
observed during the course of essential job functions.
Clean and Maintain Shop Area (10%): Maintain a clean and safe shop
area. Assist co-workers in cleaning, organizing, sweeping, and
mopping the shop area. Ensure shop floor, counters/surfaces are
free of clutter, debris, and/or spills. Clean tools and shop
equipment after use. Store tools and equipment in appropriate
designated area.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Mechanic II
Perform Preventative Maintenance (50%): Perform
manufacturer-specified preventive maintenance services A and B, and
safety checks on all vehicles. Repair and/or replace vehicle parts
and components such as brakes and shocks, engine oil and filters,
lubricants, hoses, belts, bearings, plugs, and wires as required.
Secure the necessary repair parts from the parts vendor in order to
complete all basic services and repairs. Interpret job orders,
follow work flow and document all completed tasks. Document all
maintenance and repairs by completing a check sheet for each
service provided. Input service and repair data into the fleet
management job order software. Assist other mechanics with
repairs/replacements such as brakes and suspension, minor
adjustments and body work, engine tune-ups, air conditioning
services, and basic manufacturer maintenance services.
Conduct Repair Services (45%): Perform intermediate level repairs
on a variety of vehicles and equipment, including repairs on
engines, transmissions, suspension, steering and tires, brake
systems, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, lighting systems,
and heating and air conditioning systems. Complete a diagnostic
procedure for each repair and select the most efficient method for
completing the repair while under the supervision of the Shop
Foreman. Ensure upon completion of repairs that vehicles are
correctly repaired and safe for intended use. Actively participate
in the reporting of safety issues and concerns that are observed
during the course of essential job functions.
Retrieve and Repair Inoperative Vehicles/Equipment (5%): Respond to
road calls to perform minor repairs on inoperative
vehicles/equipment as needed. Perform basic on-site diagnostic
procedures to determine if vehicle/equipment can be repaired on
site or needs to be towed to shop. Complete necessary repairs such
as recharging batteries, refilling fluid, and changing tires on
site. Arrange for vehicle/equipment to be towed to shop when unable
to repair on site.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Mechanic III
Perform Complex Repairs (40%): Perform complex repairs on a variety
of vehicles and equipment, including repairs on engines,
transmissions, suspensions, steering and tires, brake system,
hydraulic systems, electrical systems, lighting systems and heating
and air conditioning systems. Complete diagnostic procedures for
each repair and select the most efficient method for completing the
repair. Assure upon completion of the repair that the vehicle is
correctly repaired and is safe for its intended use. Actively
participate in the reporting of safety issues and concerns that are
observed during the course of essential job functions. Operate with
little or no oversight or technical assistance. Enter service and
repair information into the fleet maintenance software.
Install Specialized Equipment (40%): Complete installation of
specialized equipment such as cellular telephones, emergency
lighting, two-way radios, computer mounts, and decals. Modify
vehicle systems in order to enhance usability.
Conduct Preventive Maintenance (20%): Complete A, B, and C
preventive maintenance service and safety checks on a variety of
vehicles and equipment. Complete a check sheet for each service.
Assure that the vehicle is properly operating and is in a safe
condition for the intended use of the vehicle.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Job Requirements
Formal Education: High school diploma or equivalent plus six months
to one year of advanced study or training in tire service and
vehicle mechanics are required.
Experience: Mechanic I: Under and including one year of experience
in automotive repair and vehicle mechanics.
Mechanic II: Over two and up to and including four years of
experience in automotive repair, tire service, and vehicle
mechanics is required.
Mechanic III: Over four years of experience in automotive repair,
tire service, and vehicle mechanics are required.
Driver`s License Required: A valid South Carolina driver`s license
is required. Must obtain a Class B Commercial Learner`s Permit,
with P endorsement within 3 weeks of hire. Once in classification,
employee must obtain corresponding South Carolina CDL, Class B with
P endorsement within 3 months:
Certifications and Other Requirements: Completion of Competency
Classification test within 6 months of hire to determine placement
as a Mechanic I, II, or III.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge: Work requires a comprehensive practical knowledge of a
technical field with use of analytical judgment and
decision-making. Must be able to exercise independent thinking and
the ability to conceptualize and develop new or improved
procedures, techniques or ideas appropriate to the work
environment. Work product primarily affects processes and
program/functional areas within the department.
Reading: Ability to read papers, periodicals, journals, manuals,
and policies.
Math: Ability to deal with a system of real numbers; and practical
application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and
measurement.
Writing: Ability to write reports, prepare business letters,
summaries, meeting minutes, and emails using proper format,
punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech.
Machines, Tools, Equipment, and Work Aids: Hand tools,
nemesis/diagnostic machine, electrical power tools, pneumatic power
tools, a/c recovery machine, forklift, grinders, calipers,
micrometers, drill press, and hydraulic press. Desktop and laptop
computers, Cummins Insight diagnostic, and the fleet maintenance
software.
Working Conditions
Primary Work Location: Fleet Maintenance or Transit Bus Shop.
Environmental/Health and Safety Factors: Occasional exposure to
unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Occasional
outside work. Daily exposure to extreme temperature, wetness and/or
humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, and physical
hazards. Constant exposure to mechanical hazards, chemical hazards,
electrical hazards, explosives, communicable diseases, and physical
danger or abuse. Frequent exposure to fire hazards.
Protective Equipment Required: Steel toe shoes and safety glasses
(at all times while in the shop area). Ear plugs and gloves (as
needed).
Physical Demands
Continuously requires standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting,
carrying, reaching, pushing/pulling, climbing, vision, balancing,
bending, hearing, twisting, and talking. Frequently requires
kneeling, crawling, foot controls, and crouching. Occasionally
requires sitting, and handling. Very Heavy strength demands include
exerting over 100 pounds occasionally, 50-100 pounds frequently, or
from 20 up to 50 pounds constantly.
Mental Demands
Frequently requires time pressures, frequent change of tasks,
irregular schedule/overtime, performing multiple tasks
simultaneously, working closely with others as part of a team,
tedious or exacting work, and noisy/distracting environment.
